May 2009

DSE is gearing up for an eventful spring and a productive year in 2009!

By Marc Pouw, MD, DSE

Direct Selling EuropeHere at our headquarters in Brussels we at Direct Selling Europe are preparing to implement our strategy for the next five years after we present it to our members on 5 May 2009. I will update the readers of Direct Selling News Europe on the key components of this strategy in the July edition.

DSE Board of Directors Meeting Debrief

The DSE Association has spent the beginning of 2009 establishing its status in the industry and defining a distinct strategic position.

The Board of Directors met on 5 March 2009, to discuss and approve the strategy for the DSE association for the next five years, outlining a strong path of growth for the Association on all levels. The strategy will be presented to Members on 5 May 2009 during this year’s DSE General Assembly.

Part of the strategy is an expansion of membership, although it should be noted that there will be absolutely no compromise to its high standards and founding principles of representing the nucleus of the sustainable direct selling industry.

The board also approved changes to DSE statutes, further enhancing the cooperative and constructive way of working of the association. The next DSE Board of Directors meeting will take place on September 18th 2009 in Brussels.

Position Paper on Consumer Rights Directive

DSE’s position paper on the proposed Directive for Consumer Rights strongly reflects DSE’s values and main concerns: Whilst underlining the importance of the right level of regulation, DSE expresses its full support for the endeavours of the European Member States and the EU Institutions, to introduce full harmonisation, to create a stronger internal market and to increase the level of consumer protection. The association’s proactive actions and supportive stance are gaining notice in both the direct selling industry as well as the EU business world in general.

To further position DSE, DSE Managing Directo Marc Pouw met with BEUC (the European Consumer’s Organisation) officials on 18 March 2009 to discuss the proposed Consumer Rights Directive. Discussions led to the agreement that further cooperation could benefit both parties. In the future, opportunities for joint communications and positions will be examined.

Next DSE General Assembly – 5 May 2009 in Brussels

The next DSE General Assembly takes place on 5 May 2009 in Brussels. Expected attendees include 40 member company CEOs and their key management members. Various stakeholders from the European Institutions and from Permanent Representations to the EU, as well as trade associations and consumer organisations, have also expressed an interest in being there.
