A Brave New China

Tiens logoIn this time of austerity, Europe could look to China for inspirational ideas.

DSNE hears from the Chinese direct selling company the Tiens Group about their President Jinyuan Li’s ideas on the sharing of wealth.

One of China’s leading philanthropists and President of Tiens Group, Jinyuan Li has set his sights on the UK to create a pan-European model of his multibillion-pound corporation with one aim: to care for the people who work for him, supplying them with health, wealth and education.

Forget the old image of an insulated and isolated communist regime. China and its entrepreneurs are spreading their wings throughout the world, ensuring they care for their people from cradle to grave.
Jinyuan Li’s Tiens Group was established in 1995 and has grown quickly in Asia, Russia and South America, with Li fulfilling his dream of creating a capsule city within the Wuqing Development Zone in Tianjin, China. Now he is opening new markets in Europe, with the UK at the centre of his plans.

The Tiens Group’s interests range from biotechnology to education, retail, tourism, finance, international trade and e-commerce. The fuel that powers this massive corporate engine is the Tiens product lines: food supplements, wellness equipment, skincare and household goods, with over 1,000 SKUs currently in production.

Li’s park within the Wuqing Development District already has conference centres, R&D capability and manufacturing on a massive scale for the Tiens product lines, an International University currently under construction, staff accommodation, 4 to 7 star destination hotels and spas, and as of October 20 2010, a state-of-the-art medical centre to rival the best in the world.

The Tai Ji Sun Health Management Centre has cost Li £25 million and occupies an area of 28,000 square metres. The investment for the first round of the medical equipment is £20 million and utilises the best medical apparatus in the world. Nearly 100 state-of-the-art pieces of medical equipment are installed, including positron emission computed tomography/CT, magnetic resonance imaging, automated biochemical assembly line and Flash dual-source CT scanning systems. Some are the only examples of their type in China and are rare even in Europe and the US. A further £200 million has been earmarked for the next round of purchases and upgrading. This 21st century medical centre doesn’t turn its back on the traditional Chinese medicines and aims to be a world leader in integrated medicine, combining alternative and traditional thinking with cutting-edge medical science.

The Tai Ji Sun Health Management Centre currently has about 200 staff and is expanding to 800 employees, including 450 doctors and 300 nurses. Facilities are open to private patients and Tiens employees throughout China and the world.

A comparable UK medical facility is London’s brand new boutique Weymouth Hospital, but the price tag of £22 million here was raised by BMI Healthcare and Phoenix Hospital Group. Tai Ji Sun is on a much larger scale and the cost has been footed by one individual, Jinyuan Li, whose solitary aim is to enhance the health of his workforce and their families.

Jinyuan Li’s China is not only a place where fortunes are being made, but increasingly a place where they are being given away, as the new wealthy become the philanthropists of today and tomorrow. Jinyuan Li and the Tiens Group also donated £150 million to public welfare and social charities, as well as building up his town that now employs more than 8,000 people within his city and over 20 million agents worldwide.

China has an emerging corporate giving culture and there can be no doubt about its significance. First, private wealth exists that can be donated, a sea change from the period when there was no wealth, period. Twenty-five years ago there was no private wealth in China, but now Chinese billionaires are more comfortable saying ‘I’ve made it’. The rise of philanthropy shows the environment in China is changing, with wealthy Chinese becoming more aware that along with big profits comes a responsibility to be good corporate citizens.

Jinyuan Li has fulfilled his mantra by providing stable jobs and careers for his Tiens family, but also by giving them amazing educational opportunities with his International University capable of educating more than 30,000 Chinese and international students, and the very best in healthcare.

His main motivation to build his medical centre was the late diagnosis of his parents’ cancers, and he simply doesn’t want that to happen to anyone else. So The Tai Ji Sun Health Management Centre was born.
