FRONT COVER PICTURE
Although Croatia has been around since the 7th century, it only became a kingdom in medieval times with King Tomislav reigning from 910-928. Unfortunately this dynasty did not last and several other countries, including Hungary and the Ottoman Empire have ruled the area over the years before 1991, when it again regained its independence after the break up of the former Yugoslavia.
During its history, the current territory of Slovenia was part of many different state formations, including the Roman Empire. Although a distinct Slovene identity was fi rst articulated in the 16th century, and its prehistory can be traced back to the 8th century, Slovenia itself is a relatively modern political entity. In 1991 it also gained independence from the former Yugoslavia. The Divje Babe fl ute, claimed to be the oldest known musical instrument in the world was found in Slovenia 1995. It has been suggested that it is approximately 50,000 years old!
